This contemporary home is located on the Wildernesse Estate, a 300 acre conservation area in the north east corner of Sevenoaks, Kent. Following a substantial renovation and the purchase of a swim spa during lockdown, a plan was developed to create new leisure and entertainment spaces that would include a gym, yoga studio and dedicated swimming area, as well as a large pergola complete with outdoor fireplace for family lunches and evening entertaining.
An overgrown bank of rhododendrons was cleared to make space for the new structures and generous planting areas were added to ensure that the hard landscaping felt bedded into the garden rather than imposing on it.
A relaxed planting scheme of vibrant bulbs, colourful summer perennials and loose grasses have been combined with beautiful multi-stem parrotia persica trees to provide year-round colour and form. Around the pergola, deep borders of white roses, miscanthus ‘Morning Light’ and topiarised weeping pears help to blur the boundaries and create a sense of enclosure and privacy when you are enjoying a meal outside.
