This girls’ primary school in Sevenoaks approached me to redesign a steep grassed courtyard sitting at the heart of the school. It is currently a rather damp and shaded space and not that inviting. Post lockdown, we have all realised the value of good outside space and fresh air and the school wished to create a garden that would allow for a range of activities. Outdoor lessons, music recitals, drinks receptions with parents, as well as somewhere lovely for staff to sit during their breaks, were all envisaged. A combination of larger paved areas with built in benches, manageable level changes, safe and accessible steps and blocks of dense, colourful planting, will make this a flexible and social space.
