Raymond Unwin and Edwin Lutyens designed Hampstead Garden Suburb in the early 20th century as a ‘model community of people of all classes living together in beautiful homes set in an pristine verdant landscape’. Today, the Suburb still has strict guidelines on the balance of plants to hard landscaping in order to preserve the atmosphere of the ‘garden suburb’ whilst also being sympathetic to the needs of modern families.
This landscaping and planting scheme was carefully designed to be both contemporary and traditional. In the front garden, the off street parking is counterbalanced with a herringbone clay paver path and a pretty white planting scheme of roses, geraniums, penstemon and a graceful magnolia tree.
In the back garden, the same clay pavers have been used to create a dynamic path leading to an outdoor dining area on the sunny side of the garden. A generous terrace and wide steps down to the lawn provide ample space for lounging (and dogs!)
